The Art Institute of Houston

For those individuals living around the Houston, Texas area who are interested in following a career beyond the traditional, the Art Institute of Houston is the logical choice. A subsidiary of the Art Institutes, one of the largest post secondary career oriented education for the creative arts, the Houston facility first opened in 1965 as the Houston School of Commercial Art. Joining the Art Institutes family in 1978, the Art Institute of Houston is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, authorized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and is accredited by the American Culinary Federation (ACF).

The Art Institute of Houston has a strong curriculum that includes the media arts, culinary arts, design and fashion programs. The media arts area includes the interactive media design (AOS and BFA degrees) and media arts & animation (BFA degree) tracks allow graduates to find their way into animated films or video game development. The culinary arts area includes the baking & pastry (AOS degree), culinary arts (AOS and diploma degrees), culinary management (BS degree) and restaurant & catering management (AAS degree) tracks, which are aimed for those individuals who feel a passion for everything that is related with a kitchen and pleasing an increasingly finicky restaurant going public.

The design area includes the graphic design (AAS and BFA degrees) and interior design (BFA degree) tracks: whether students are looking to work with logos, print ads, product design or setting up the look of houses, offices and/or restaurants, this is the place to be. Finally, the fashion area offers the fashion & retail management (BS degree) program, which provides students with the right combination of current design knowledge and business judgment.

Applicants for the Art Institute of Houston must have a high school diploma or GED certificate (and in the cases of Bachelor programs, an associate’s degree). Candidates first schedule an interview (personal or via phone) with an Assistant Director of Admissions, after which they fill out an application for admission and an enrollment agreement. An online application is also possible through the institute’s website. English and math tests are done to incoming students. Additionally, for the media arts & animation program portfolios are required. The Art Institute of Houston offers the possibility of financial aid (federal pell grants, scholarships, loans, etc) for students who qualify for it.
