Great Lakes Institute of Technology was created in 1965 as J.H Thompson Academies, Great Lakes Institute of Technology was the first private academy for career training in Erie, PA. The institute offers career training by recognized professionals, financial and/or housing assistance and job placement services for its graduates. Great Lakes Institute of Technology is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT), and the Allied Health departments are licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools. The brand new facility is equipped classroom, labs and clinics, in addition to an actual medical office building. The instruction is done in small classes, where students learn by demonstration, lecture, study, practice, group discussion and role playing.
Several programs are available at Great Lakes Institute of Technology, presenting students with a broad spectrum of choices. Programs for dental assistant (9-month diploma program that prepares the student for patient care, office and laboratory duties, etc), diagnostic medical sonographer (17-month program focusing on diagnosis through scanning), massage therapy (9-month diploma that covers Swedish massage, shiatsu, reflexology, acupressure, aromatherapy, etc), medical assistant (8-month diploma aimed to perform administrative and clinical tasks), medical secretary (8-month diploma that covers administrative and clerical duties), pharmacy technician (7-month diploma that allows the graduate to assist the pharmacist), surgical technologist (10-month diploma for professionals who will assist surgeons in the operating room) and veterinary assistant (8-month diploma covering laboratory and clinical procedures) provide students with exciting, highly marketable careers. Moreover, Great Lakes Institute of Technology also offers career placement assistance, as well further possibilities to its graduates, with workshops, seminars, certification updates and industry specific training.
Applicants for Great Lakes Institute of Technology must have their high school diploma or GED and they have to pay a $25 application fee. A $100 registration payment must be made upon acceptance. Additionally, health and reading exams are also required, as well as other background checks (criminal, etc). The application form is available at the website (on PDF format) and must be filled and submitted (via regular mail) along with the application fee. Financial aid is available (through federal grants, student loans, etc) for qualifying applicants.
