School of Piano Technology for the Blind
The School of Piano Technology for the Blind provides specialized quality education for blind and visually impaired individuals leading to successful careers in the field of piano technology. The school is located in Vancouver, Washington and it has more than fifty-five years providing specialized education.
Graduates at School of Piano Technology perform commercially acceptable tuning, regulation and repairs to the actions and other working parts of both vertical and grand pianos. The piano technology industry offer an excellent career because there is a high demand of services and not enough professionals to providing tuning and repair services.
There are some skills or attributes needed for developing a career in piano technology for instance, normal hearing, average finger dexterity, and good physical fitness, ability to work independently with a minimum of direction, time management skills to keep appointments and meet deadlines, ability to solve expected and unexpected problems, good organizational skills and ability to effectively communicate, self confidence and a willingness to learn. In addition, students require taking the Career Program Assessment Test.
The training program consists of 2800 clock hours over a 2 year period. The schedule is for two ten- month terms with a two-month summer break between terms. Students also have the possibility to obtain financial aid or scholarships by a rehabilitation agency in their home state or plan their tuition by the Plan to achieve Self-Support (PASS), the Program of the Social Security Administration or other government or private sources.
