Veterinary & Other Animal Studies: Learn to Contribute to Animal Health
Veterinary & Other Animal Studies degrees encompass majors such as animal health, equestrian studies, animal nutrition, zoology, animal training, animal sciences and animal breeding. Animal health majors study biology and chemistry with the goal of preventing and controlling disease in agricultural animals. Other topics of instruction include animal diet, genetics, pharmacology, environmental science, and more. Related majors to animal health include pre-veterinary studies and animal sciences.
Equestrian studies focus on horses and horseback riding. Equestrian studies majors learn about the breeding, the anatomy and the care and feeding of horses, running horse-related businesses, such as stud farms, stables, and riding schools, and horseback riding and horse training. They also learn about breeding beautiful and fast horses, taking care of health concerns such as arthritis and lameness and how to teach riding or dressage. As an equestrian studies major you will be able to artificially inseminate a mare, decide if a saddle is fitting a horse correctly, hire (and even fire) employees, massage tense muscles on an animal that weighs close to a ton and work outdoors, even very early in the morning. Zoology majors study animals, their activities and their internal workings. As a zoology major you will be able to publish a research paper in a scientific journal, help a professor with his research, join the campus chapter of the American Institute of Biological Sciences, complete an independent research project, dissect a fetal pig, take chemistry, physics and advanced math in addition to biology classes, collect invertebrates out in the field and spend time in lectures and in labs.
