Engineering: The Art of Designing…

Engineering degrees encompass majors such as engineering science, general engineering, electrical engineering technology, architectural engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer engineering. Engineering science majors design their own programs; they have a broad base of knowledge in science and math, many of them study subjects such as nanotechnology and environmental engineering. Both of these subjects require familiarity with a range of scientific concepts. So, engineering science majors use principles of math and science from a wide range of disciplines in order to solve engineering problems.

As an engineering science major you will join the campus chapter of an engineering organization such as the Society of Women Engineers, complete a senior project analyzing, for example, heart rates, learn how to use statistics in a research project, write a detailed design report, study wind flow around an artificial flapping wing and work with fellow classmates to build a voice-activated wheelchair. Careers related to engineering science include sales engineers, operations research analysts, material engineers, industrial production managers, engineering and science managers and aerospace engineers.

General engineering majors learn to use math and science to solve practical problems and help create everything from oil-drilling techniques and assembly lines to MP3 players and spacecraft. As a general engineering major you will be able to join a campus chapter of an organization like the American Society of Civil Engineers or the Society of Woman Engineers, pass challenging math and science classes, gather and interpret data as part of an internship and work with a team to design and build a project.
