Education: Learn to Teach and Help Others

Education degrees encompass majors such as education, early childhood education and multicultural education. Education majors learn to design and teach inspiring lessons, help students succeed regardless of their age, background, or learning style, and set up and manage a classroom. The classes cover topics such as the planning of classroom activities, school health and safety issues, and educational psychology. As an education major you will spend a semester student teaching under the supervision of an experienced teacher, do paid or volunteer work as a camp counselor, coach, or tutor, visit schools and classrooms and report on your observations and design lessons and practice teaching them in front of your classmates. The typical courses of this major are: teaching methods, supervised student teaching, philosophy of education, instructional technology, education of the exceptional child, education in a multicultural society and educational psychology.

Early childhood education majors learn to teach children ranging from infants to third graders, according to the school system. As an early childhood education major you will have to consider working in Florida, Arizona and California, where the demand is higher, as well as in urban and farm areas and learn about the many philosophies of early childhood education. The typical courses of this major are: parent-child relations, instructional resources and technology, instructional design, curriculum methods, classroom management and behavior and child development. Related majors to early childhood education include special education, psychology, language arts teacher education, human development and family studies, education, and child care management.
