Legal and Criminal Justice: Serve Society

Legal and Criminal Justice degrees encompass majors such as criminal justice, court reporting, police science and legal administrative assistance. Criminal justice is an interdisciplinary major that studies public administration, sociology, psychology, law, and more. Criminal justice majors explore all the aspects of crime, the law, and the justice system. In addition, they will learn the ins and outs of police departments and other law enforcement agencies. As a criminal justice major you will be able to do an internship with the FBI, the police, or a human rights organization, interpret statistics, learn the law and read about countless court cases.

A successful criminal justice major has to be a person who is interested in all aspects of the law, such as the way law enforcement agencies operate and the psychology behind criminal behavior. He/she has to want to serve society and have good communication skills. Typical courses of this major include professionalism and ethics in criminal justice, police systems and practices, history of criminal justice systems, fundamentals of criminal law, criminal justice research methods and criminal investigation. Majors related to criminal justice include sociology, prelaw studies, police science, law enforcement administration, forensic science, criminology and corrections.

Court reporting majors learn how to record courtroom proceedings such as trials. Police science majors learn about every aspect of police work in order to prepare for police and security work. Careers related to police science include private detectives, police officers, firefighters, federal agents, detectives and crime scene investigators.
