Human Resources: The Joy of Working with Other People
Human Resources degrees encompass majors such as human resources management, human resources development and human services. Today, people are recognized as psychologically complicated individuals within the heart of every organization. Human resources management majors study people and the workplace while learning what it takes to meet their needs in the office. So, they learn how to handle employment issues such as health and safety in the workplace, staffing, training and pay. As a human resources management major you will practice training methods on your classmates, read the history of labor unions, learn the laws on hiring and firing and study the psychology of motivation.
A successful human resources management major has to be a person who truly enjoys working with other people. He/she must have communication skills and interpersonal skills. Typical courses of this major include training and development, statistics, staffing, performance management, organizational behavior, legal issues in employment, employee and labor relations and compensation and benefits. Human resources development majors help businesses run more smoothly by helping people build and strengthen their job skills and enjoy their work more. The wide range of subjects that they study includes organizational behavior, adult education, psychology, and career counseling. Related majors to human resources development include psychology, human resources management and education. Human services majors learn how to help people meet basic physical and emotional needs.
