Beauty: The Physical Appearance is Not Everything but…

Beauty degrees encompass majors such as cosmetology, electrolysis, skin care, hair design, make-up and facial treatment. Cosmetology majors learn to cut hair, give manicures, facials, and other salon basics such as handling difficult customers. Cosmetology majors also learn how to help others look and feel the best. A typical cosmetology course covers topics from massage to hairstyling to safety and sanitation standards. As a beauty major you will learn salon business skills, study safety and sanitation laws, experiment with hair color, scrub and shampoo scalp after scalp and practice cutting hair of every kind. A successful cosmetology major has to be a creative person who is willing to deal with moody customers because people are really hard to please regarding their hair style.

Typical courses of this major include salon business practices, permanent waving, shampooing, and hairstyling, manicuring, introduction to cosmetology, haircutting, hair coloring, facial treatment, skin care, and makeup and clinical practice. A skin care major learns all about body and facial skin. They practice body wrapping, massage techniques and other spa treatments, skin analysis and temporary hair removal. Other topics of study are: business practices, decontamination, nutrition and skin anatomy. Make-up majors learn to transform the appearance of a person by using prostheses, wigs and cosmetics. Some skin care majors go on to work on actors in TV, film and theater. Majors related to make-up include theater arts and cosmetology.
