Graphic Arts Are Not a Solo Act
Graphic Arts degrees encompass majors such as Graphic Design, Graphic Communications, Graphic Designers and Printing-Machine Operators. Graphic Design majors learn the basics of good design; for instance, the way type (style of lettering) and images are used to make visual statements. In addition, they learn the design and computer skills necessary to create the look for websites, jackets, CD’s, magazines, books, and more. A Graphic Design major also learns to use cutting-edge computer programs; whether he/she wants to work in print or multimedia.
As a Graphic Design major you will enter student competitions, complete an internship, put together a portfolio, exhibit your work, study in a tight-knit community and work long hours in the studio. A successful Graphic Design major has to be a visual person who is computer savvy, organized and creative. Having the ability to work well with other people is extremely important and valued because graphic design is not a solo act. Typical courses of this major include typography, production design, Photoshop for designers, history of graphic design, graphic design techniques and graphic design studio. Graphic Communications majors learn the technical skills needed to work in production settings such as digital imaging, screen printing, offset lithography, press, and more. Graphic Designers prepare documents for the printer, meet with clients, learn the latest computer software, revise designs in response to feedback, create designs under deadline pressure and see their ideas in living color in print and online.
