Financial: Not Just About Making Money
Financial degrees encompass majors such as finance, banking and financial support services, financial managers, financial planning, security services administration and management and investments and securities. Finance majors learn to plan for the long term because companies have to be successful not only today but in five, ten or twenty years. In order to manage finances with the future in mind, you have to be able to answer important questions such as: Can the company afford to give employees a raise? Can the company spend less on raw materials per year? Is it better to rent or buy office space? The field of finance is mostly about helping businesses and other organizations make money but this is not as easy as it sounds, there is more to it.
As a finance major you will practice making investment decisions, understand the economy and the stock market, work with complex computer programs and learn how to create and manage a budget. A successful finance major has to be a team player, a creative problem solver and a great communicator. He/she obviously has to be good with numbers. Related majors to finance include real estate, insurance, economics, business and managerial economics, business administration and management and accounting. Related careers to finance include stockbrokers and financial services sales agents, personal financial advisors, loan officers and counselors, insurance underwriters, financial managers, financial analysts and budget analysts.
