Accounting: Learn to Analyze Financial Information

Accountants have to analyze financial information and discuss important business decisions with upper management. Evidently, most accountants also have to keep the books and record every financial transaction. An accounting major learns how to gather, analyze, interpret and communicate information about the financial performance and risks of an individual or organization. In addition, accountants also study tax law, learn to use accounting information systems, prepare tax fillings, evaluate the efficiency and profitability of a company, create and analyze balance sheets and use GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles).

It’s important to be analytical and attentive to detail in order to become a successful accountant, since most of them spend the majority of their time giving advice and communicating with others, from the general public to CEO’s; therefore, good communication skills are essential for success as well.

An introductory accounting course covers a wide variety of topics; for instance, basic accounting concepts and the procedures to prepare the three basic financial statements: the statement of cash flow, the balance sheet and the income statement. There is so much to learn in these courses that most are offered over two semesters. In an introductory accounting course you not only have to attend lectures, you also have to visit the computer lab to act out simulations, analyze real cases and conduct research. Related careers to Accounting include Public Accountants, Management Accountants and Internal Auditors, Government Accountants and Internal Auditors, Financial Managers, Financial Clerks, Financial Analysts and Budget Analysts.
